SECONDARY COMMUNITY

Ages 12-18

Throughout the adolescent school years (12-18) along with continued academic growth, the goal of the middle school program is to guide students to become critical thinkers and engaged citizens active in their broader community and world. It is designed to respond to the sensitivities of this age: personal dignity, social justice, and belonging.

While part of this program, students treat each other with respect and are comfortable with the knowledge that each person has different strengths and challenges. Students are active in their own learning, work collaboratively and rely on one another to work responsibly with and for the group.

Facts are presented not as isolated from life outside the classroom, the Montessori adolescent program offers lessons with practical applications that allow students to make improvements in that community. “What will I use this for?” is an often-asked question of the adolescent, as he is determined to use knowledge to DO something in the world. Students are empowered through their capabilities to turn their focus and skills toward the collaborative of the classroom and beyond.
